This fall, students in freshman composition and a variety of other courses are reading and writing about David Shipler’s The Working Poor. Thursday, October 25, the One Book, One Community project hosts Shipler, a Pulitzer Prize-winning writer and former foreign correspondent for The New York Times. Students and faculty may attend Shipler’s 6:30 p.m. lecture in the Arkansas Union Verizon Ballroom at no charge. Former U.S. Senator Bill Bradley says The Working Poor “powerfully argues that we must simultaneously address the full range of interrelated problems that confront the poor instead of tackling one issue at a time. It is a compelling book that will shift the terms of and reinvigorate the debate about social justice in America.” Chancellor Gearhart also shares his support for this year’s book selection and issue in a brief video posted on the One Book website.
